Now for something a little different. I thought to bring your attention to a fun event that just transpired at one of the sexiest and most entertaining PF blogs out there — at Budgets Are Sexy of course! J Money from BAS invited me to participate in his showdown series which involves him pitting up 2 bloggers against each other. He gives us a bunch of questions and he puts up our answers side by side, and you get to vote for who “wins” the showdown.

He’s done a few of these already, among them are these interesting pair ups:

Showdown #1: Get Rich Slowly vs The Simple Dollar
Showdown #2: Poorer Than You vs Squawkfox

And well, I got swept into Showdown #3 with one of my favorite online buddies, Lazy Man! This awesome graphic was designed and created by no other than J Money himself to mark the occasion:

I think the match up is perfect. Lazy Man and I are both from Silicon Valley, both with past careers as Java software engineers who started our PF blogs at roughly the same time (circa 2006!). Then I found out that he lives where I used to live so I know his neighborhood quite well. In fact, Lazy Man lives only 20 minutes from where I currently reside, so from time to time, we hang out (with Cap from Stop Buying Crap) to play our favorite board game of the hour: Settlers of Catan.

Anyway, the showdown questions that we were given reveal a little more about who we are, along with some of our basic philosophies on money. It was a fun match up between two former software engineers (in the same field, practically) who share the same interests in blogging, finance and nerd (read: strategy) games. To read more, do hop on over to J Money’s corner to meet more bloggers.

I came across my favorite internet meme being use in an interesting capacity: it’s been used to make a statement about the Bush and Cheney economic legacy, so I couldn’t help but feature it here. But before I go into details, allow me to define what an internet meme is. For those new to the term, It’s an online fad that takes off, goes viral and becomes part of internet lore and culture, and is usually amusing, silly, weird or worse. The particular meme I’m talking about here has to do with a cute cat that’s made to play the keyboard rather resignedly, to the tune of an earworm you’ll find hard to shake. But it sure makes a great ring tone.

This may make more sense if you see it in action. Or maybe not. Either way, you can see it in the video below, where an adorable keyboard-playing cat accompanies a Dick Cheney interview during which some unsavory economic facts about the Bush era are rattled off. Check out Dick Cheney as he is put on the spot.

Cute kitty aside, here’s what I took away from this video. Here’s a quick snapshot of how our country’s financial situation has degraded over the last 8 years:

Granted, economic and business cycles sometimes have a mind of their own, and may take on a momentum and direction that are independent from that intended by the government, but this would still be small consolation to anyone who’s looking for someone to blame for their financial hardships. As they say, “it’s the economy, stupid!” and there’s nobody else but our leaders to hold accountable for our nation’s plight. Would you agree?

If you’ve had enough of grizzly old guys dredging up sordid statistics, you can cleanse your mind a bit by taking a jog around the financial blogosphere:

Want to hear what the financial crisis sounds like when it’s set to some techno-polka music? Then check out this video that shows us some melodies derived from recent stock charts (the songs were arranged using Songsmith, the Microsoft Composition tool). It’s a little hard to describe but when you see it, it’s self-explanatory. Maybe it’ll elicit a mild chuckle out of you. If I’m lucky.

Hmmm… I think it could have worked better if they used more dramatic musical scores; those would have been more effective in emphasizing the market downtrends.

I asked the question “does this financial crisis affect your views on personal finance?” I wrote my thoughts on this because I’m beginning to notice just how insidious a recession we have: not only does it wreak havoc on our finances but also tests and challenges our long-held money beliefs and the way we think about our finances.

What’s family life in America like these days? Here’s one older, middle class family’s report on their lifestyle, economic trends and status, in the midst of recession.

Ready for the New Year? Not sure that many people really are. I got a hold of this ditty that somehow found its way to my email box recently, via one of those friend of a friend of a friend chain mails. It’s a common tradition for many people to give updates of their lives over the past year when the year draws to a close.

Anyway, I found the following message particularly amusing as it offers a snarky perspective of how people could be viewing the past year (2008). At the same time, you can look at it as a glass half empty or half full sort of thing, or the doughnut vs the hole. It’s up to us to see what we’d like to see.

The family’s message starts here:

Our Family Life In America

How Was Our Year? The Gloomy View

Greetings from Livermore, California! This has been one tough year. So what’s it been like for us?

Well I ran out of grants and now have to work for somebody else, or retire — which is worse? E is fighting with her partners about keeping some cash in their company to prepare for the inevitable downturn, while bonuses are handed out like candy…. Can you believe it? With the state of our economy as it is, who can afford to be so complacent?

Meanwhile the house and pool are going to wrack and ruin. Black algae is taking over the pool, nothing kills it, not even pure acid. House is being eaten by rats — they tore a hole in the sheet-rock and laid into E’s bird feed before we could stop them. We now have a Rat Zapper and it works great! But batteries are getting expensive: don’t know who is going to win this war!

Birds are fighting over the seed; some get killed by flying into the window when a hawk comes by and scares the **** out of them. But we are afraid to stop; they peck on the window if we are late!

Ants are in the kitchen most days. E takes pity on them and tries to reason with them, but they just throw shoes; fortunately tiny ones. Lots of mushrooms this year, possibly due to global warming. We are playing roulette with the deathcaps; one bite and it’s “sorry, Bob, but that’s all”. So far so good, but about 20 pounds (9 Kilos) to go.

Broke a tooth, God knows why, so I have to go easy on nuts until it’s fixed. E is holding up even with dental problems of her own of course, but it could be worse. Sons are struggling to make ends meet and to survive in the concrete jungle. Our investments did even worse than usual, far worse actually. No signs of a stock market bottom just yet. We’ll be living under a bridge next. Our high yield savings accounts are no longer as high yielding.

Weather is bad, bad — getting real cold. Snow on the hills! I think global cooling is getting the upper hand. Not enough rain either. Drought is getting serious. Too many people to feed! That second stimulus check the government’s been promising should be put to good use.

We hope you had a nice Christmas! 2009 is likely to be worse!

Lifestyle Report, Economic Trends: The Cheerful View

What a great day it is!

Sun is shining, birds are singing, quite well fed by E. They come in flocks nowadays, just like St Francis! She does such a wonderful job caring for them (and me, of course!) We don’t even go on vacation any more. But that’s fine because our house is so wonderful, who would ever want to leave?

Swimming pool is such a boon in summer; our grandkids can’t wait to get in. They have to be dragged out when the teeth-chattering becomes too violent. Pool just loves the chemicals I feed it with — every little bit helps the economy as well. I try to do my part for our battered economy.

E is doing a wonderful job with the cooking — snacks ever ready (very healthy, natural and cheap as well) and soups, roasts, veggies, mushrooms picked from the wild — you name it! What more could a guy ask for (*cough*)?

E’s company is doing great! Ever expanding, no signs of economic recession yet. E’s software upgrades are first class! My research is going great guns, but it would be nice to retire and get some peace for a bit. Just to make sure, we’re keeping ourselves on a recession diet.

Son #1 is branching out into new ventures and contemplating new small business ideas: looks very promising! Was very lucky getting out of BigCorp before the roof caved in. Son #2 is doing great taking the financial district by storm — is still very happy with his job and hobnobbing with what’s remained of the corporate elite, sifting through whatever opportunities arise during this economic crisis and financial downturn. There are still some pockets of optimism and opportunity here, he says!

Grandkids are such lovable darlings, hope they enjoyed what we got them for Xmas (despite budget cuts) — the little electric car looked like it was a success! The little one may become a sporty type — he loves to kick balls, play frisbee, etc. and is so talkative these days.

Our health is holding up, thank the Lord. Hopefully our hiking is helping keep things under control.

Stock market sell off has been a blessing really. We are getting back to our roots — less consumption, more sweaters and knitwear (E just bought a beauty for me, bless her heart!), using a washing line instead of a drier etc.

Well, well, so not such a bad year really. The future can only be brighter (nowhere to go but up?). Let’s all look forward to the upcoming year and try to look on the bright side of life….!

So how was your year?

We began to celebrate Christmas last night, on Christmas Eve.

We’ve gone through the first half of our annual family celebrations and now’s the hangover. I’m a bit groggy from a fun, wild night of partying and good food with relatives and old friends. Our wild night comprised of making sure that the kids weren’t going to overturn the furniture as they ran around the house, of talking above the constant din of non-stop family chatter, and culminated with a frenetic exchange of gifts that left us all truly merry. I had such an awesome time at our inter-generational reunion that I kind of lost my voice today (too much excitement and late night chatter has done me in). So I’ll let this guy wish you a Merry Christmas for me.

Some people really love Christmas. And they share their holiday spirit and Christmas cheer by going all out this time of year.

Some of us can’t help it. We have to have the biggest, or the most, or the coolest thing out there. Some of us have to be different even for Christmas. Or maybe we’re “collectors” and we’ve got an attachment for Christmas flavored stuff.

Anyway, here are some stories and pictures of people who dare to be different this time of year. These folks sure are festive and spend a good amount of time and money to prep for their short time in the spotlight. To them, the trouble and the spending are no object. They will always have a budget for this sort of thing .

Sharing The Christmas Cheer

#1 Tallest Christmas Tree On Private Property

This is a photo of a small part of a Christmas tree lodged in someone’s house. Greig Howe’s house, in fact, in Bournemouth, Dorset, England. Yes, this was done on purpose.

This family’s Christmas tree is sky’s the limit, giving the illusion of passing through all three floors of the family home. That’s a lot of work and decorative alterations to accommodate this monster for a few weeks of “wow”! Plus where the heck do you find a tree that huge? I guess in the same place that department stores do.

Greig paid the equivalent of $360.00 (around 250 pounds) for the tree, then covered it with 2,000 LED lights, 160 ornaments and a lovely tree-crowning star.

#2 Lady With 61 Christmas Trees

They have to be everywhere.

She’s not the only one collecting trees — here’s yet another lady with 37 trees, and this one with 27 trees. Just be careful of the potential hazards that this type of scene may present.

#3 Massive Santa Claus Collection

While women collect Christmas trees, how about this guy who collects Santa Claus (or Father Christmas, in some parts of the world) figurines and decorations?

If you’re big on Santa, you’ll have to check this site.

My Love of Christmas

As for me, well, I’ve gotten into the collectible spirit myself a little bit by building my own Christmas ornament collection, a hint of it you’ll see in this post on money, finance and fancy.

And as far as the holiday spirit goes, we can do pretty much anything to celebrate and share it, except maybe by making a statement with a collection of these ornaments (click this at your own risk)!

One of the easier DIY projects around: go frugal by making your own unique, fun, cheap Halloween costumes.

We’ve been way too serious around here lately discussing the financial crisis and the upcoming presidential elections with some depth, and I’m quite certain we’ll be returning to those staple topics later on. But for now, I thought to lighten the mood with something more humorous and entertaining. I thought to salute a few Halloween ideas that I thought were cool in many respects — they are fun, custom, cheap and for the most part, unique. But before I proceed, I’d like to tell you how our Halloween plans are turning out so far.

Like all kids under the age of 10, my kids are pretty excited about the impending holiday where they get to wear their costumes in school and around our neighborhood. To save money, we ended up recycling one costume — our younger one is wearing the same thing he wore last year. Since he is going to a different preschool this year, that’s quite alright as nobody has ever seen his outfit before! My older son has outgrown whatever we have available and settled for a ninja costume (just like what he wore a few years ago, except bigger).

In the past, we’ve tried to cut costs by looking for recycled kid’s wear. It was hit or miss for us when we looked into some Craigslist selections that turned out to be a poor fit or were too worn to be reusable. In these cases, the time and gas spent to drive to a seller’s home were not worth the savings. But you may still luck out by checking the online classifieds anyway. Or maybe you know someone who’ll just outright give you their old garb?

Another idea is to buy these costumes when they’re on sale. The best ways to save on seasonal purchases is to buy them way before or long after a given event or holiday, when they get discounted.

Nevertheless, by now, you probably already have your costumes picked and ready to wear for goblin day, but if you don’t, then maybe some of the following creations I’ve come across may inspire you to come up with something (hey, even the Mummy costume below could work?):

Costume 1: Mario Brothers

These children are pretty cute in these Mario Brothers costumes. You can probably make up your own custom outfits by:

getting some caps and pasting on some letters on them (which you can have your children do themselves),

painting the moustaches on your kids,

picking up oversized gloves,

having your kids wear overalls.

Pretty simple! And did I say cute?

Costume 2: Wolverine

Watch out for sharp objects!

I presume that this is an attempt at a Wolverine costume, but I guess he could also be Edward Scissorhands. But to complete the look, he’ll need way more work, better threads and makeup.

It may be an incomplete getup, but he gets points for hitting two characters with one costume. For the kid-safe set, you can start out on this look by making some “origami” claws.

Costume 3: Lego Star Wars

At first I had no idea who these people were supposed to be, but then I realized they were modeled after the characters in this video game called “Lego Star Wars, The Complete Saga”, which incidentally is currently ranked in Amazon as their #1 fantasy game for the Wii.

Costume 4: Kid Robots

This comes straight out of some suggestions I made earlier on how to encourage your kids to hone their creativity while going light on your budget with some cheaper toys. This is a perfect DIY project for your own children to try (with your help) and once they’re done, it’ll be something they can be proud of.

According to WTF Costumes, here’s one robot costume that’s so wrong that it works.

Costume 5: Fancy Paintings

These outfits are just outright cool. They look easy to replicate: create a frame, pad it, cover it with fabric, then wear a gown. You’ll probably also do alright without the frame — I can see how it can be an inconvenience to carry around. In case you’re wondering, these costumes are based on the paintings: Girl With A Pearl Earring by Dutch master Johannes Vermeer van Delft, and the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci.

Costume 6: When In Doubt, Be A Mummy

If you’ve run out of ideas but need to get into a costume quickly, then grab the most convenient thing. Try this look. You’ll only have to go to the bathroom to get the stuff you need.

Okay, your turn. Do you still dress up for Halloween?

Despite all the tough economic stuff we’ve been dealing with lately, what say we take a moment to think about what makes America special to us?

I’m a first generation immigrant turned naturalized American who came to this country almost 25 years ago to get an advanced education in the field I wanted to specialize in. I had planned to return to my home country soon after finishing my studies, but that didn’t pan out. I ended up staying in the United States because of the job opportunity I was soon afforded and the financial benefits I received by staying here. I’ve often wondered how my life would have turned out if I had stuck to my original plans. Do you ever wonder what your alternative life could have been like?

All I can say is that America has been a wonderful, incredible place to live in. I went through some pretty big adjustments to get settled here, but it was all worth it. Thanks to America I can:

Drive by myself. The stereotype is true (not elaborating), I’m not a good driver and it was impossible for me to learn how to drive anywhere else.

Drink water from the tap.

Stop worrying about mosquitoes.

Have a fast internet connection.

Work at home.

Use Tivo. I haven’t quite warmed up to online television.

Invest in the stock market without having as much fear of being wiped out.

Have a solid chance at success even while starting from scratch (or nothing). I guess that’s why they call it “The American Dream“.

Start a business without paying lots of random fees that don’t have anything to do with the business.

Do many things without having to pay anyone off first.

Hole up at home and never EVER get bored!

I could go on and on… but I’ll spare you the details.

What I don’t like about this place so much? Sometimes things get too politically correct for my tastes… and we don’t have these available to the masses.

How Do I Love America? Let Me Count The Ways

I feel patriotic and I’ll tell you why. I’m basing some of my reasons on this political joke archive and Gizmodo. A lot of this is also snark, so I hope you can bear with me.

This country is so accommodating. There are handicapped parking places everywhere, even in front of a skating rink.

Only in America…do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries and a diet Coke.

Only in America…do banks leave both doors to the vault open and then chain the pens to the counters. And where are the armed guards? (That’s an honest question!)

Only in America…do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars in the driveway and put our useless junk in the garage!

Only in America…do we buy ourselves answering machines to screen calls and then have call waiting so we won’t miss a call from someone we didn’t want to converse with in the first place.

Only in America…do we have drive-up ATM machines with Braille lettering.

Only in America…do we buy hot dogs in packages of ten and buns in packages of eight.

Where else can we get these crazy toys? Thank you Gizmodo for these finds!

George Bush Toilet Brush (aka Bowl Buddy) for $16.95.

Hillary Clinton Nutcracker (ugh!) for $19.99.

Guns in knives. Or is it knives in guns? For $699.

Yay for cheap barbecues on huge grills! And grillz!

Many forms of work are decently rewarded. And we all love winners — America loves its champs and pays them well. Even eating is a sport where you can get prize money! You may even have a better shot at this than with the lottery, if you work hard enough.

We love to work ourselves to the bone today, so that we can afford to relax and live lazy lives tomorrow. This article drives the point so well.

We’re ready to multi-task in style!

There’s a market for everything. Lots of business ideas, dumb or otherwise, come to fruition here. This place is a haven for senseless inventions that will command some of your dollars. Sometimes, we just can’t resist!

Viva Americana! What else is great about the U.S.? Well now it’s even much easier to get a piece of it! Buy America, it’s on sale right now . All humor aside, I feel truly blessed to be living here.

This is part of our series on “scary money tips and stories”.

I’ve read in some places that the cost of looking good can run as high as $200 a month for some people. By buying only top-notch beauty products and visiting the cosmetics and salons on a regular basis, you can easily set yourself back by over $2,000 a year or more. For those who are serious about keeping up their appearances, that’s around $60,000 over a lifetime of primping which would have probably really boosted retirement savings by a hefty bit if this money were ever redirected to a tax deferred account. How does an extra $245,000 at the end of 30 years sound? [that's $2,000 a year allowed to grow at a rate of 8% a year for 30 years!]

If this kind of savings sounds good, then you may be inspired by certain stories of truly serious savings in the beauty front. For instance if I ask: what do you think is the cheapest way to maintain your hair? The extreme saver’s answer would be: Do Nothing!

And before you think that it would be impossible for anyone to do absolutely nothing to their hair — not shampoo, not condition, not wash it — for their entire lifetime, check out how this one woman managed to avoid hair care products of any sort for an entire 11 (that’s ELEVEN) years (well actually it’s been 13 years, since this storied aired)!

Let me introduce you to Penny Weynberg, who practices the ultimate frugal hair care activity: skipping hair washing altogether!

Penny Weynberg has decided against spending a small fortune on shampoo and conditioner like most women. The 29-year-old mother-of-two believes hair has the natural ability to clean itself – so she doesn’t bother.

It all started when the chemical engineering graduate was studying for her A-Levels. “I was too busy revising to bother about my appearance,” she said.

Mrs Weynberg, who didn’t even bother to lather up for her graduation ceremony or her wedding day, has admitted to having greasy hair for the first month.

But she says it became less greasy and more glossy as time passed.

Explaining her beliefs to Sky News, she said: “I find shampoo just strips out all the goodness and then you put conditioner on to put the goodness back in.

Mrs Weynberg brushes her hair daily to remove dirt and smells and rinses it with warm water every few months.

Wild! But is it do-able? I can imagine though that this must all depend on the type of hair you have. Those with oily hair should probably avoid trying this out because it may get unbearable the first few days or weeks….or perhaps indefinitely (ugh). But if you think of what good this could bring: by going with the complete natural look (e.g. no makeup, cosmetics, perfumes, shampoo or any beauty products at all) while at the same time rerouting the money you save to a compounding interest account or a good investment, you can pretty much fund an IRA every year! [Okay, in case it wasn't clear, this was said in jest -- we all really need to find our balance when it comes to caring for our looks.]

Now, if eschewing beauty products of any sort is beyond your capabilities, then how about employing these other “extreme” frugal beauty tips and ideas?

Here’s how to wash your hair without having to use shampoo!
