So Much Business, So Little Time

thanksgiving goal project
How I wished I had more time to spend on the various projects I’ve committed to. Now that I’ve started getting the hang of it here at this site, another huge endeavor awaits, which involves this new business I’m working on. I’ve mentioned before that I wanted to use this place as a platform to discuss educational articles on money as well as my own personal efforts on launching a business. Being booked solid and with so much happening, I wonder about the one more thing on my plate that is beginning to yearn for more attention.

It’s this business: we’ve reached a new milestone. With the requirements and designs somewhat in place, I now have to think about developing this thing and finally making concrete what was once a hazy concept a few months ago. Who knows how long this will take with all else going on? You know of course I’ll be revealing it here once it’s ready, but “ready” will take money, resources and loads of time. I’d like to surprise myself and have something presentable by early next year. I’m aiming for a prototype by late December.

You know how these things turn out though — at some point something’s got to give. Right now it’s My Right Brain which I affectionately call my other blog — I’ve been neglecting it for quite a while simply because my material for that blog has succumbed to time constraints. I just don’t have the time to be an indolent couch potato any longer, fiddling with the Tivo. Now I’ll have a problem when my favorite shows start airing again. I’m just hoping nothing else has to give….too much.

So I’ll keep toiling along here and tell you more about my personal startup journey as it develops. In the meantime, I’ll be talking about my experiences with finance and presenting tips that I come across, as well as share with you my commentaries on interesting business, finance and tech news stories that catch my eye, while I hunt around for some additional PHP, MySql, CSS, HTML, Java and/or Ruby On Rails experts around interested in coding for equity.

Do stick around for the ride!

< This is a goal setting exercise instigated by the Instigator Blog, during which I intend to manage my time more effectively as well as aim to have my software business reach a new milestone by Christmas. Thanks Ben! Please check out the Instigator Blog for more on the goal writing project! >

I know exactly how you feel! I recently found myself working on an online business project that I think could work out – and before I knew it, E-Commerce News went on without updates for almost 48 hours (with traffic plummeting as a result). Was quite a grim experience and an excellent reminder of just how important it is to maintain the right balance between commitments in my life – and how easily your gains can be erased by only moments of inattention (I reckon it might take me weeks to recover all the traffic that I have lost as a result of my failure to update my blog yesterday).

George — wow, can’t believe traffic to change on a dime! That’s a great warning to us bloggers! I’m trying to figure out how I can balance things more effectively as well, so that we can keep up with all our commitments online and offline!

I agree. The biggest omission people make when creating a budget is time. I’ve had very successful projects that really consumed me in the start-up phase. Although my return was good, it’s hard to put a value on the time lost to being overloaded.

George, very interesting. Would you mind elaborating on how much traffic you lost and why exactly it happened? Somewhat frightening for the bloggers out there.

Tom
