On That New House He Just Bought…
We have a very close family friend who used to live in a warehouse used by his family’s business. His family owns a lot of real estate and various businesses to boot, yet one of the most amazing things I’ve found about this guy is how he has no qualms at all to live anywhere, including a warehouse where his family keeps some inventory of antiques they have for sale. Whatever doesn’t fit in their show room ends up in this warehouse, so it isn’t built with a bathroom, while you get your privacy from the office rooms in this space.
Our friend lived there until a few months ago when he finally bought a house in San Francisco for a steal
. We got invited to his housewarming yesterday and it’s just good to know he now has his own bachelor pad along with a roommate to share experiences and expenses with. Welcome to the fun new world of home ownership. Happy new house, Alex!

- Get Rich Slowly: I’ve faced negative cash flow twice in my life (both when I stopped working for a while) and now is actually one of those times when we expect to be in the red for an extended period of time. This post inspires me to work on trying to turn the tide a little for ourselves.
- Wise Bread: What a highly interesting finding: we tend to spend more when we’re feeling emotional. I’ve heard of emotional eaters but I guess there are also emotional spenders.
- Lazy Man and Money: Lazy Man reviews a book by another fellow blogger: Joseph Sangl. Find out if the book’s content is as compelling as its title: “I Was Broke, Now I’m Not.”
- Money Smart Life: Tina reminds us that our credit history can affect our insurance rates. I recall writing a post about how our credit scores have quite an impact in our lives, also explaining the premise: the weaker our scores, the more expensive things get for us.
- Gen X Finance: While we’re on the subject of credit scores, here are some great tips to establish and improve your credit history and FICO score.

- Free Money Finance: Foreclosure auctions are starting to ramp up around California and I’ve got a friend chomping at the bit trying to get me to join him at these events. Before you do the same thing, read about these steps to buying a foreclosed home.
- Mighty Bargain Hunter: MBHunter has some insights on budgeting. He encourages us to go through the exercise of budgeting on paper and not just have our financial numbers swirl around in our heads. Okay, this article reminds me that I have some work to do here.

Thanks for the kind mention, Ms. SVB.
Best regards
I had this discussion with wifey recently. It seems that I see cars as a way of getting from A to B and houses as something that keeps the rain and wind out. I mentioned that it was cheaper to rent a motel room than our house which sent her flying ;-P While she agrees on the car the house (read nest) is much more important to her than me.
@Early Retirement Extreme,
.
I wonder if it’s a guy vs gal thing — the house vs car debate, I mean. Guys seem to have less issues where they live and how their shelter looks like. While girls have different requirements… I would seriously have a cow if I were made to live in an RV, for instance
Though I have some basic standards I try to maintain, I’d go for the functional car (regardless of how it looks) but choose the fancier home. With the home as an appreciating asset, and my strong interest in interior design, it’s no surprise I’d prefer the house!
The car thing is important to this guy at least…It has been the toughest Stuffitis to get over. But the house, eventually, is an appreciating asset!
She is right fellas
