Let’s hear it for the women bloggers of personal finance!
Cool news! Lynn and the folks over at Wise Bread are spearheading a neat event which spotlights women personal finance bloggers. Lynn and the Wisebreaders attended the BlogHer convention, and apparently, the virtual no-show of women pf bloggers at the BlogHer convention did not escape notice.
I actually feel a little guilty about not having had a chance to attend the BlogHer event in San Francisco, especially since I LIVE around here, but I have to blame my fairly chaotic schedule for it. By the time I realized I could make it after all, it was too late and the event was full. I should’ve had the presence of mind to ask the BagLady if I could join her at this conference, but no… I was lame.
Well, what Lynn saw at BlogHer may echo reality a bit — women PF bloggers aren’t as visible as female bloggers from other niches OR male bloggers in the PF niche. In fact, this appeared to be the case when I attended a personal finance blog conference in the city, which was sponsored by a financial software group. Out of over 20 attendees, I was the only female at the event!
But back to this discussion — Wise Bread has decided to take the initiative to bring personal finance women bloggers to the forefront and have opened their forums with some interesting threads focusing on personal finance, women and blogging. So if you have a moment, you may want to check out the forums and engage in some elbow rubbing
.
I am also extremely honored that Will, Lynn and the gang at Wise Bread have asked me to share some financial Q & A at their forums next week from 8/11 to 8/17. That’s where you can grill me all you want, so I hope to see you there!
Where else have I been recently? I also made the rounds at my usual favorite pf spots. Check them out!

Hi there,
I saw the list, in fact I’m on it. I think a lot of it has to do with insecurity at putting ourselves out there in a field where women traditionally aren’t experts. Not that anyone has explicitly said ‘oh you can’t be an expert’, just that people might feel that, because they also write about their kids or coupons, they can’t be an expert.
As for myself, I don’t consider myself a personal finance expert, and I’m not interested in giving people answers, which is what I think a lot of people look for when they read the bigger male bloggers.
I am a personal finance blogger, loud and proud. And I’d love to say so at Blogger 09, if only I can afford the plane ticket from France!
I did not realize that there were so few women personal finance bloggers. While I have not found many in my particular situation, there seemed to be a goodly share of blogging women married with or without children talking about their finances. Many different voices with a variety of perspectives at least to my eyes. I too would be disappointed to see such low attendance at a gathering of women pf bloggers.
Thank you for mentioning my article over at the Carnival of Personal Finance. I am glad you found it noteworthy.
I was a little worried after seeing that I was linked in a post entitled “Women Personal Finance Bloggers At Wise Bread”, since I’m a guy. I was relieved to see the “Plus The Carnivals” part. Thanks for the mention.
I wonder how many pfbloggers, male or female, go to conferences in the first place; the BlogHer conference probably isn’t representative.
Oh crap.. I thought Broke Grad Student was a woman. What the…
Oh my! I *also* assumed that Broke Grad Student was a lady blogger. Now why did I think that?
@Kelly – It’s wonderful that we can all have a voice in this online community. I think we’re all contributing to the collective financial knowledge of the community regardless of how we’re presenting it. From others’ experiences — even in the realms of raising a family or handling daily finance — we are all talking about money. And we’re learning from each other. So I’m glad we’re all here to share in the discussion.
@Frugal Pursuit – yours was a great carnival hosted. I was happy to be part of it!
@Jim – Ah, but the BlogHer conference was highly promoted and many of us heard about it. It was just interesting to see that it was dominated by “parenting” bloggers and although there are a large number of financial blogging women out there (as evidenced by this ginormous, expanding frugal hackers list I keep track of), an incredibly small percentage showed up. Could we frugal pf bloggers be too frugal to show up at conferences
?
Thanks for the mention, Congrats on your success! Will have to check out the forums.
