A Grocery Savings System and Cold Weather Talk

by Silicon Valley Blogger on January 18, 2009

So it’s a long weekend!

With my days blending into each other — it happens when you don’t work at a normal office — it slipped my mind that we’re having a long weekend and that the nation will be observing a valued holiday (MLK, forgive my absent-mindedness). My daily routine is the same almost everyday, with only slight variation. Despite how it sounds, my days are never dull (it depends whom you ask though), but they are predictable!

Maybe I’m due for another break from the routine sometime? Speaking of which, I’ll soon be featuring the writings of a few of my blogger friends whose guest posts I look forward to publishing this week. In the meantime, I have the following news and financial articles to share:

Announcements Around The Blogosphere

Penelope from Pecuniarities is holding a contest to give away a free 6 month subscription to the Wall Street Journal. By sharing your 2009 financial resolutions, you’ll be in the running for the prize!

Also, don’t forget to catch Christian PF’s 25 most helpful articles written by personal finance bloggers. Our post on the various ways to invest in the stock market garnered a place in his list! Some of the other helpful articles I think I’ve written? This post on how to keep fit, and how to become a millionaire!

We also made it to RealEstateUndressed’s Magnificent 7 Nominee list for 2008! Our post on frugal steps to survive a tough economy made the list (winners yet to be announced).

Now on to the articles I enjoyed this week!

Personal Financial Articles

  • Stop Buying Crap informs us of the situation with Circuit City’s liquidation and close. So use your gift cards and store credit as soon as you can!
  • The Happy Rock *really* wants a snowblower, right about now! While the rest of the nation is inundated with record-breaking cold weather, we here in California are experiencing unprecedented warm weather — almost like what we’d expect in late spring. And I don’t really like it because this means we’re quickly headed for a drought later this year. The last few years haven’t been very “rainy” for us and I find it worrisome.
  • Studenomics puts together a great list of nickel and dime tips for young people.
  • Free By 50 shows us a potential trap in bond funds.
  • MoneyNing provides us a review of ETrade’s savings account. I have an ETrade account as well and would love to provide my own review someday.
  • Value For Your Life discusses his 25% grocery savings rule and presents some of the challenges you may face by implementing his savings system.
  • Momma’s Blog gives us some great ideas for indoor family activities you can participate in, especially if the weather where you are isn’t cooperating.

Haha, I hear you on the days blending together. I went to Affiliate Summit last week and so I didn’t do any blogging for five days, Sat to Wednesday, and it really threw me for a loop because I didn’t know what day it was. Today is Monday right? :)

I’m glad I’m not the only one who does that. I started doing work for the site on Saturday and the next thing I knew the sun was going down. 6 hours later and a stiff neck. Just found your site. Great job with it. I’m going to start reading.

@Jim,
Yep! It’s Monday! Don’t confuse me now… :D Anyway, I wish I could have attended the Affiliate Summit too — sounds like you guys had fun! But see, I don’t travel without my entire family, so that would’ve been a logistical challenge. ;) Next year perhaps? Or whenever the next get together is.

@Elementary Finance
I hear you! Stiff neck, stiff bones, you name it! So I have the habit of getting on my stationary bike during breaks just to get the heart pumping and to shake off the rigor (yes, I watch a lot of CSI so I couldn’t help but use the term. hah!).
