Risk Tolerance, Mutual Fund Expense Ratios & Our Money Blogger House Guest

by Silicon Valley Blogger on December 7, 2008

welcome mat

I mentioned the other day that we were having a visitor over for a few days. Well, he came and just went. Cap from Stop Buying Crap (yep, another personal finance blogger!) stayed over at our place while he was here in Silicon Valley on business. When he arrived here on Thursday, we all met up with a couple of other bloggers — Lazy Man from Lazy Man and Money and Kevin from Rate Ladder. We had a nice discussion where we had a chance to talk about the blogosphere and business ventures… Definitely very eye-opening.

It’s great when there are other people in your online circle who are based in the same geographical area, since we can easily hold impromptu meetings! Our discussions drifted into the realm of entrepreneurship. Nice to know that despite the risks and hard work involved, we’re all striving for independence from the traditional nine-to-five. I was struck by how despite our similarities (as bloggers), we’ve also got our various approaches to making things work for us financially and business-wise.

Lastly, I have to say that Cap is such a sweet guy — so courteous and gracious. He spent the day with me on Friday going through my rounds as I picked up my kids from school and brought them to the pediatrician! Then we all went out to attend an early Christmas party together (where Cap bonded with the guy folk on the subject of online games). Fun times! Cap, our door is open to you anytime!

As it goes, if you’re a pf blogger in our general vicinity, drop me a line! Let us show you some nice California hospitality. :)

Other Announcements

Voting for our new logo design is now over. As for which logo won? It was a tight vote between 2 logos. Now how about I surprise you all with it when I put it up?

Also, Trent from The Simple Dollar has an e-book for sale called 365 Ways To Live Cheap! Do check it out when you get a chance. Given its premise, it promises to be very handy in today’s economic climate. Congratulations to Trent for coming out with this book and fulfilling the dream of many bloggers out there. :)

Hey! Thanks for the link and for including me in your roundup! Yep, I’m also striving for financial independence and hope my blog is just one small part of it.

Wow, that’s very kind of you. You hardly find that kind of humanity from anyine these days.

You’re a warm hearted person J, and that’s why you also attract great people like yourself.

Cheers! ;-)

I think it is pretty neat that you were able to put up a fellow blogger for a few nights. It always amazes me how close, tight knit, and friendly the blogger circle can really be.

As usual, you have some really interesting blogs on your roundup as well. I thought Ask Mr. Credit Card offered some relevant insight into the changes that the major credit card companies have been making.

I can’t believe you silicon valley types are even networking as bloggers… It was hard enough to compete when you had the whole dotcom thing going, and L.A. is of course impossible for anywhere but Bollywood to match for networking.

(All said with tongue in cheek! :) )

Great article. Thanks for providing such a nice selection of finance sites in the roundup.

@Monevator,

LOL, actually Cap is from the L.A. area! Most friendships start out online and the geographic area is secondary. When we find out someone we know lives around here, we contact them to see if we can meet up. :)

I believe most financial bloggers are from the central and Eastern part of the USA. I think tons of them are in Washington. Check this map out — it shows you where personal finance bloggers are located.

That map is pretty interesting. That independence from the traditional 9-5 is sure an appealing prospect. Health insurance is one challenge. And for those that do so, make sure you get disability insurance.

Thanks for including my post in your roundup! BTW it’s cool that you got together in person with some other bloggers! The sense of community is something that I had never anticipated, and was a pleasant surprise when I started up my site.

Sincerely,
Amanda

Darn! I missed voting for the new logo. When do you think the new logo will make its debut?

Joe,

That’s cool. I should have the logo up sometime this century! ;)
