The Carnival Of Money Stories #5

by Silicon Valley Blogger on February 19, 2007

money storiesThe Carnival of Money Stories #5 has come to roost over here this week. We had a healthy crop of submissions which were comprised of both Money Stories and articles that I thought were technically not stories but were nonetheless personal in nature. I included these other entries and have labeled them as Money Musings, because I thought that was what they were: views, thoughts, analysis, opinions on financial and business issues. I’ve also added a few lines from each author as an intro to their articles.

I regret that I had to screen out some double submissions, spam or other misplaced entries that didn’t come across as a personal post or story. Just watch out for the next scheduled edition and try again, but do submit your best personal money-oriented tale. For clarity on what types of articles this carnival will feature, please review this post.

But enough of my chatter…. let’s get on with the carnival!

Money Stories

Bill @ Ask Uncle Bill gives us Thinking Outside The Box.

Our parents were Great Depression and World War II veterans and borrowing money was just something they didn’t do. You saved for your kids education and you expected them to go to public universities.

Living Almost Large chastises herself with the story Huge Stupid Tax….Timeshare.

Yep, years ago we bought a timeshare. Really dumb, probably our dumbest mistake. Very very stupid. Bad idea. Our biggest problem was the annual maintenance fees. I never actually calculated how stupid it was but I am about to here.

Andrea @ Wisebread makes a proclamation with I Don’t Love Capital One – How to Get a Lower APR, or Possibly Not.

Now, I don’t have the best credit history. A few years ago, when I was unemployed for a few months, I had to consolidate a few credit cards. Also, I totally went crazy back in college and rang up some terrible balances paying for other people’s stuff.

Golbguru @ Money, Matter and More Musings shares with us The Story Of My Investment In A Motorcycle.

Then, I bought a bicycle (bike) and rode it for about a week, after which someone stole it. Then, I bought another bicycle and someone stole the damn thing again!

Sharon @ The Frugal Duchess presents How I Milk Sacred Cows for Cash.

Almost every family budget has a few “sacred cows,” which are special perks that defy fiscal responsibility. That’s the wisdom from the Economides, “America’s Cheapest Family.” Frankly, I have my own sacred cows, but I have various strategies for saving money while enjoying luxuries.

Wilson Ng @ Reflections Of A BizDrivenLife tells us Its About How Hard you Take The Hits and Still Keep Moving.

The story is about an aging fighter who wants to fight again purportedly to exorcise his past. As usual with the other Rocky movies, it is a feel good movie with fight sequences well orchestrated. But I believe the best part is actually the subplot of his son.

Martin @ Money Blog Site shares with us What To Do With A Bonus. He’s coming up to a lot of money so what is he going to do with it?

I just received a profit-sharing bonus from my company because we had a very good quarter. The bonus is about one month’s salary. This is just the start of what seems like a huge money stream coming in.

Kay @ Don’t Mess With Taxes brings us No Good Tax Break Goes Unpunished.

New this filing season, and for 2006 returns only, is the credit for previously-paid federal excise taxes on long-distance telephone service. Several readers have dropped me notes about how the claim process is going for them.

Bryan @ Bryan C. Fleming gives us an update with Week 6: Interest Paid – Million Dollar Savings Club.

Gaining interest on your money is wonderful feeling. Have you ever experienced it? Imagine getting money for doing nothing. It’s fun.

Praveen @ My Simple Trading System presents Welcome, From A Born Again Simpleton.

I was doing ok in stocks. I was making less than I should have, mostly because I kept spending money on courses, and switching from one system to another. I then added stock options, and my results became more volatile.

Nina @ QueerCents covers a great interview with 10 Money Questions For Ed Salvato.

No! The world is wide open and available to everyone. In fact if more people traveled, I believe there’d be fewer problems in the world. Air travel is now cheaper today then 20 or 30 years ago (as measured by the dollar’s value 20 or 30 years ago).

The Prince of Thrift @ Becoming and Staying Debt Free talks about Bank of America.

So, I am making money, but that’s not all. I signed up for their “keep the change program,” as well. That meant, I had to open a savings account with them. Which means after the same 90-days, I will get another $10 bonus.

Making Our Way gives us Business Travel and Ways To Waste Time.

Over and over again, I keep supressing the urge to buy a sony psp. Here it is at the Costco website. I realized that I need something to distract me while on long flights or sitting in the hotel room at night.

Money Musings

Cameron @ Empty Nest gives us Retirement Income Planning – The 5 Year Rule

I have looked at investment company websites and generated plans according to their software but this approach has always left me cold. There is something about handing off my security to someone trying to sell me something that is less than encouraging.

Erek @ Verve Coaching shares with us Getting Out Of Debt (Part 1).

When I start working with clients who want to get out of debt, I quickly confront them with the bad news. There will be no millions until you change your mindset and your debt management practices.

I’m so glad I found this Carnival! And thanks for including me. I’m going to try to get more up close and personal with money/tax posts so I can keep participating. Nice job!

Check out the personal finance stories on http://www.stopspendingmoney.com There are some good ideas for saving money. Plus you can track your money growth. (Money growth sounds better than saving doesn’t it?). Well, I think so. Take care out there – and watch your money grow every day!
